EEcoSecurities developed the Project Design Document (PDD) for the electricity generation from biomass proposal by Celulose Irani at the manufacturing plant that have in the Campina da Alegria district (State of Santa Catarina, Brazil). The aim was to reduce the proportion of electricity from the local network to minimize GHG emissions linked to the mains supply (with high weight of fuel oils). The proportion extracted from the overall grid was 44% (56% came from generation plants from existing biomass and small hydroelectric plants).
The project incorporated the construction of a biomass generation plant with a capacity of 9.43 MW, which would meet the growth in paper production (and derivatives). By burning waste wood chips and unused forest residue from the area, electricity was generated by a more energy-efficient process using technology that was safe for the environment and from paid for by the national bill. The raw material that resulted from the process had until then been treated as waste, which meant that its use guaranteed the reduction in methane generation, a by-product of the process of decomposition.
EcoSecurities was responsible for appraising the project for carbon credits (CERs) issued by definition to CDM (Clean Development Mechanism), and manage their sale via ERPA (CDM Emission Reduction Purchase Agreement).
The project's contribution to sustainable development was significant. At local level it supposed increased employment, and the national balance sheet included the promotion of clean technologies and the diversification of power generation sources in the country. This demonstration of the potential use of biomass as fuel favoured its adoption and the reduction of uncontrolled forestry landfills. At corporate level this allowed Celulose Irani to achieve its goals of cleaner production and respect the environmentally. The use of clean and efficient technologies and conservation of natural resources are part of Agenda 21 for Sustainable Development Criteria in Brazil.
