Development and organisation of course Companies and Climate Change
The Companies and Climate Change course arose from a proposal driven by IIMA to the Climate Change Working Group at Tecniberia. After approval from the Spanish Office for Climate Change, Tecniberia commissioned IIMA to develop and run the course. The opening ceremony was attended by José Luis González Vallvé, president of Tecniberia, course director Alejandro López Cortijo, of IIMA Consultant / EcoSecurities and as special guest, Ismael Aznar, Deputy Director General Emissions Trading and Flexible Mechanisms. IIMA was responsible for the design, organisation and execution of the course. In a joint effort with the training and marketing department the business strategy and scope was developed in which target groups were identified and various communication channels established. From the beginning a mixed mode teaching method, classroom and on-line, was opted for.
The classroom lectures were theory based, conducted by IIMA with two other Association companies. Lectures took place via weekly sessions throughout the months of March and April 2010, and counted on the participation of speakers from prestigious companies and entities in the carbon sector, such as OECC, AENOR, AEMET and SENDECO2. The content, selected by IIMA, covered key considerations for understanding the risks and opportunities arising from climate change, from the economics of carbon markets to compensation voluntary initiatives, through the science of global warming and legal requirements derived from Spanish and international politics.
The virtual classroom developed the practical content using a variety of formats including documents, reference guides, videos and articles especially selected by the lecturers. Student evaluation was also conducted online, permitting assessment of the knowledge acquired by students through various tests and exercises.
The course was attended by students from engineering firms and Corporate Social Responsibility who, in the final course survey, expressed satisfaction with the knowledge and quality of information obtained.
