IIMA, in alliance with the local company WOMY, founded ENVERGY GAMBIA LTD in 2007 to promote this project. The objective is to bring and extend the cultivation of this subtropical species in the country, from the seeds of which it is possible to extract oil valid for biodiesel production. Cultivation provides for the recovery of woody species in degraded and highly eroded soils, and also an excellent carbon sink. Because of the agronomic characteristics of the species, fruit collection provides a magnificent opportunity to create labour, crucial in West Africa.
The programme is designed to develop small family farms (5 ha), additionally supported by the micro-credit grants for women. In the first phase this is expected to extend to an area of 5,000 ha, which will provide employment and cash for more than a thousand families.
The first phase of the project has been the construction of a seedling production centre, equipped with a multi-tunnel 2,600 m2 latest generation greenhouse, with a capacity of 2 million seedlings a year. The cultivation area is 114 hectares, of which four are equipped with irrigation drips.
The following phases will consist of installing two floors: one for the extraction of oil and the other for the generation of electric energy, 50,000 T/y and 3.9 Mw, from the waste cake which result from the seeds after extraction. These will be the first in the region.
