Avoided Deforestation in the Argentine Chaco
IIMA is developing this project for avoided deforestation and the removal of the causes of degradation of an important forestry extension of nearly 50,000 acres in the Chaco region of northern Argentina. Overgrazing, unsustainable timber extraction, massive clearing for re-appropriation as agricultural land (destined for soya fields or cattle pastures), and the construction of infrastructure access and communications are the main threats to these forest areas dominated by coloured and white quebrachos.
The project is initially aims to renounce any clearing of forests or agricultural exploitation which figure in the province development plans. In addition, it aims to trying to avoid overgrazing of poor and barely profitability livestock by enclosures. The loss of income from relocating this livestock for the indigenous communities of the area would be compensated through the plantation, in a small area, of productive woody species.
The first phase determines the viability of this REDD project, quantifying the volume of carbon credits which it could generate. In a second phase, IIMA will scope and define the exploitation projects (wrecking, removal, logging, soya and maize crops, planting of pasture and livestock benefit). The project will be registered under the Voluntary Carbon Standard.
